40 Things to be Grateful for Every Day

30 Days of Gratitude- Day 22 cc by aussiegall

Be grateful for 3 things every day

If you’ve had a difficult day at work, at school or at home, gratitude is probably the last thing on your mind. Yet it should be the first thing. Why? It’s simple: gratitude releases endorphins, in much the same way that they’re released when you eat chocolate – but without the calories!

The biochemistry of gratitude

Gratitude is not only about releasing endorphins; it’s about changing your perspective. It’s so easy to fall into the “poor pitiful me” trap, where nothing seems to be going right, or you can only be grateful if fantastic things happen to you. Both of those perspectives make it difficult to truly be grateful. It’s also important to keep in mind that gratitude is most often not about material things. It’s more about the simple bare necessities of life. Think simple.

There’s scientific proof for gratitude being good for your health. A study on increasing happiness conducted at the Positive Psychology Center at the University of Pennsylvania found that happiness can be a learned behavior. Participants were asked to write down three things that went well each day and their causes every night for one week. The result among participants was increased happiness and decreased depressive symptoms for six months after doing this exercise for just one week.

An attitude of gratitude

The key idea of this simple daily change is to cultivate an attitude of gratitude. Yet that’s a big step if you’re used to seeing everything through negative glasses. So first, you need to look for small things you can be grateful for. If you can’t find anything in your life to be grateful for, I’ve provided a list – a few of my favorite things (besides raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens).
